South Korea server
1. background and design goals
1.1 goal: provide low-latency, stable, and ddos-resistant access to korean users, ensuring availability of more than 99.95%.1.2 background: game/video/e-commerce services need to use korean native ip (local/kr ip) to reduce cross-border delays and accelerate through korean operators.
1.3 constraints: cost budget, bandwidth billing method (95 peak/fixed bandwidth), compliance and filing requirements.
1.4 indicators: rto < 1min (critical path), rpo close to 0 (active/standby or synchronous replication), bgp failure switchover < 1s (bfd assist).
1.5 output: multi-line access architecture diagram, server configuration list, ddos strategy and emergency plan.
2. line and routing strategy selection
2.1 use at least two different korean backbone operator lines (example: kt, sk broadband or lg u+) to achieve physical and upstream redundancy.2.2 use bgp multi-homing and combine it with bfd (bi-directional forwarding detection) to shorten route failure detection to <1s.
2.3 consider anycast to be used to distribute to multiple korean nodes to reduce single point pressure and improve local hit rate.
2.4 apply/lease a native ip segment (such as /29 or /28) for each line to ensure that the ip is a local segment in south korea to avoid cross-border nat or hijacking issues.
2.5 external announcement strategy: the active uses the shortest as-path, and the standby uses a higher local-pref or longer as-path for automatic fallback.
3. server/vps and host configuration examples
3.1 typical web node (edge) configuration example: 2 vcpu, 4gb ram, 40gb nvme, 1gbps bandwidth (billed at 95 peak), suitable for lightweight sites.3.2 medium-sized service configuration example: 4 vcpu, 8gb ram, 120gb nvme, 1-2gbps bandwidth, with local cache and nginx reverse proxy.
3.3 heavy load/database host example: 2 x intel xeon e5-2630 v4, 32gb ram, 2 x 480gb nvme raid1, 10gbps direct connection, dedicated vlan and redundant power supply recommended.
3.4 ip resources: each physical machine is allocated 2-4 korean native ips for different services (public network, management, monitoring, backup).
3.5 storage and backup: regular snapshots + off-site real-time replication, examples of snapshot cycles: hourly increments, daily full volume, and saved for 7 days.
| node type | cpu | memory | disk | bandwidth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| edge web | 2 vcpus | 4gb | 40gb nvme | 1 gbps |
| application/cache | 4 vcpus | 8gb | 120gb nvme | 1-2 gbps |
| database master | 2x xeon | 32gb | 2x480gb nvme | 10 gbps |
4. load balancing and cdn integration
4.1 adopt two-layer load balancing: local lvs/haproxy does four-layer distribution, and the application layer uses nginx or envoy for intelligent routing.4.2 combine with cdn (such as cloudflare, akamai, or local korean cdn), use cdn to cache static resources and return dynamic requests to the nearest data center.
4.3 cache configuration example: static resource ttl 1d, api response ttl 0 (or short ttl 30s), path-level caching rules are required.
4.4 health check: lb performs tcp/http detection on the backend (interval 5s, timeout 2s, offline after 3 consecutive failures), and adjusts traffic based on bgp routing policy.
4.5 session stickiness: use cookies or session allocation based on consistent hashing, and cooperate with redis shared sessions to achieve stateless expansion.
5. ddos protection and security strategy
5.1 edge protection: deploy upstream cleaning (scrubbing) service, and the cleaning threshold must be clearly stated in the contract (example: free cleaning to 50gbps, paid to 200gbps).5.2 computer room blackhole and traffic rerouting: when attacks exceed cleaning capabilities, configure strategic blackholes or rate limits to prioritize the protection of the control plane and key apis.
5.3 host-level protection: enable syn cookies, tcp_max_syn_backlog tuning, conntrack speed limit and current limit rules (example: limit new connections per second to 2000 cps).
5.4 application layer protection: waf rules intercept common injections and limit abnormal request rates (example: 600 write operations per minute limit for the same ip).
5.5 monitoring and alarming: netflow + indicator collection, traffic sudden increase threshold setting (for example, uplink bandwidth > 60% and abnormal port traffic > 20% triggers an alarm).
6. high availability design and fault drills
6.1 redundant topology: at least dual-active or active-standby data centers, and cross-computer room databases adopt asynchronous/semi-synchronous replication or synchronous replication based on distributed storage.6.2 route switching drill: use bfd+bgp for automatic switching. the drill frequency is once a quarter and the bgp convergence time is recorded (target <5s).
6.3 status detection: prometheus + alertmanager real-time monitoring, key indicators: latency (ms), 4xx/5xx ratio, number of connections, bandwidth usage.
6.4 disaster recovery: rto drill, including dns ttl downgrade (set ttl to 60s within the switching window), and verify the rollback process.
6.5 documentation and sop: develop emergency sop (contact list, upstream cleaning portal, switching script, rollback steps), and conduct on-duty drills.
7. real case: an online game access solution mainly for korean users
7.1 background: an online mini-game company with 500,000 daily users aims to achieve latency of <30ms and reduce packet loss in south korea.7.2 topology and resources: 2 computer rooms are deployed in seoul. each computer room: 4 application nodes (4vcpu/8gb/120gb nvme/1gbps), 2 databases (2xxeon/32gb/2x480gb/10gbps).
7.3 network and ip: signed contracts with two korean upstreams, applied for 2 /29 native ip segments for external services, bgp multi-homing and enabled bfd. the average daily delay has been measured to be 18ms on average, and the packet loss is <0.2%.
7.4 ddos handling: when encountering a 120gbps udp amplification attack, upstream cleaning absorbed and switched back within 5 minutes. the business was affected in less than 10 minutes, and the sla met 99.98%.
7.5 achievements and suggestions: combined with the cdn cache rate, the cache rate has been increased to 68%, and the average user response time has been shortened by 20%-30% through route optimization and anycast. it is recommended to add automatic expansion strategies and more fine-grained waf rules in the future.
